Aerial Release Technique with Nancy Smith (A.R.T.)

This workshop begins with Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) and moves into aerial improvisation using mixed apparatus (fabric, sling, low-flying trapeze, hoop). Aerial Release Technique (A.R.T.), developed by Nancy Smith, blends the cracked-open experience of SRT with improvisation scores specifically designed to unlock creativity, break movement patterns, and find new ways of moving on the ground and in the air. Solo and group improvisation skills and scores are featured.
SRT is a highly specialized and useful form of kinesthetic training practiced by dancers, aerialists, and teachers throughout the world. It integrates poetic imagery, hands-on partner studies, and other non-traditional dance exercises to stimulate technical and aesthetic growth. SRT emphasizes principles of multidirectional balance, multidimensional being, and effortlessness to enhance one's movement on the ground and in the air.
Brief writings about your class experiences are an integral aspect of this course.
Prerequisites: Folks who are comfortable in the air and can perform a 2-3 minute sequence on their apparatus of choice are welcome to attend this workshop. Students must be able to invert in the air throughout class on any apparatus in order to be eligible for this class.
Nancy Smith is the founder and artistic director of Boulder, Colorado, based Frequent Flyers® Aerial Dance, founded in 1988. In 1999 she also the founded the international Aerial Dance Festival which has brought aerialists and dancers together in Boulder each summer since. Ms. Smith and colleague, Jayne Bernasconi (Baltimore, MD) co-authored the first book on aerial dance called; Aerial Dance. It was published, June, 2008 by Human Kinetics. Her choreography with Frequent Flyers® Aerial Dance has been seen across the US and Canada.
